Thalys Luncheon Discussion

On May 1st, members and guests of the French-American Chamber of Commerce gathered to hear Jean-Michel Dancoisne, CEO, Thalys International, offer remarks on the evolution of European rail travel.

Stephen Dreyfuss, Partner, Hellring Lindeman Goldstein & Seigal LLP, welcomed attendees and reminded them of the importance of French-American business relations. Noting that France is the sixth largest investor nation in the United States, Mr. Dreyfuss emphasized that business relations between the two countries have a significant impact on the economies of each.

Frederic Langlois, President & CEO, Rail Europe, offered some general insights on the day's topic of discussion. He pointed out that the speed and convenience of rail travel now makes it possible to "live in Paris and work in London." Humorously, he urged attendees to "use your brain, take the train."

Mr. Dancoisne opened his presentation by summarizing the growth of the Thalys International high-speed rail network, and outlined the features and services now offered by the company. He also explored opportunities for future development, and stated that Thalys is confident in the rise of rail transportation. Noting that "[Thalys] expects there will be a tremendous switch to rail use", Mr. Dancoisne cited the comparable ease of rail travel and the increasing affordability of train tickets. Several important topics were also covered in the question-and-answer session that followed the presentation, during which Mr. Dancoisne elaborated on the challenges and opportunities facing the expansion of the European rail network. Specifically, he addressed the upcoming difficulties as train companies will be required to switch their satellite signaling to the to the new standardized European Traffic Management System. He also outlined the benefits of the transition once the system is in place.

The FACC would like to thank Rail Europe and Thalys International for sponsoring the event.
