An event created as an initiative by the Young Executive Committee, FACC members and guests gathered at the renowned Gracie Mansion on Wednesday, February 23, for a behind-the-scenes look at the official residence of the Mayor of New York, Gracie Mansion.
Members visited both wings of the Mansion, the original wing being built in 1799, by Archibald Gracie. The City of New York appropriated the estate in 1896, incorporating its 11 acres of grounds into the newly formed Carl Schurz Park. The tour of the Mansion, built in the Federal style, was lead by tour guides from the Gracie Mansion Conservatory. After decades of use as park facilities, Gracie Mansion was eventually restored and became the first home of the Museum of the City of New York. Parks Commissioner Robert Moses convinced City authorities to designate it as the official residence of the Mayor. Until Mayor Bloomberg, every Mayor since Fiorello H. La Guardia has lived in Gracie Mansion.
The guides pointed out the many additions and restorations that have taken place in the Mansion, eventually transforming it into the "People's House", a location that is accessible to the public as well as city agencies. The guests had the opportunity to see where the Mansion accommodates visiting dignitaries, such as former guest President Nelson Mandela.
After a visit of the mansion, members gathered for a drink and networking at Café d’Alsace
